What is a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?

      +-

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a document containing information on the properties of hazardous chemicals, including physical, health and environmental hazards. SDSs also provide information on how to safely handle, store, and dispose of hazardous chemicals. All SDSs must be prepared in accordance with the UK's Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.

What information does an SDS contain?

      +-

An SDS must contain 16 different sections of information, including the chemical and product name, identification of the supplier, hazardous ingredients, physical hazards, health hazards, environmental hazards, precautionary measures, first aid measures, fire fighting measures, accidental release measures and disposal considerations.

Who should have access to an SDS?

      +-

All workers who may come in contact with hazardous chemicals should have access to the SDS for that chemical. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that these documents are available to the workers and that they are familiar with the contents.

Are SDSs required in the UK?

      +-

Yes, SDSs are required by law in the UK. All chemicals classified as hazardous must have an SDS prepared in accordance with COSHH regulations.

What are the penalties for not having an SDS?

      +-

Not having an SDS in place can result in serious penalties, including fines and/or imprisonment. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that all hazardous chemicals are accompanied by the appropriate SDS.

How often should an SDS be updated?

      +-

An SDS must be revised whenever new information becomes available that would significantly change the hazard classification, exposure limits or regulatory status of the substance.

How can I access an SDS?

      +-

An SDS should be provided by the supplier of the hazardous substance, and may also be available from the manufacturer or distributor.

What should I do if I cannot find an SDS?

      +-

If you cannot find an SDS for a hazardous substance you are using, contact your supplier or the manufacturer. If you are still unable to find an SDS, contact your local government health and safety authority for advice.
